Lower back pain is no walk in the park–in fact, it can prevent you from walking in the park! It’s also extremely common, so if you’re struggling with lower back pain, you aren’t alone.
Part of the reason it’s so common is that several factors, conditions, and injuries can affect the lumbar spine, the area between the bottom of your ribcage and the top of your pelvis. In many cases, these various factors can overlap, leading to persistent pain.
That’s where Key Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation Centre comes in. Our physiotherapists will take the time to understand the specific causes of your lower back pain so we can create a truly personalized treatment program. Keep reading to learn more about our approach.
Understanding Lower Back Pain
Your lumbar spine supports much of your body’s weight while also allowing for day-to-day movement. When something disrupts this balance, it can lead to pain, stiffness, and limited mobility.
Common Factors Contributing to Lower Back Pain
Injuries
- Overuse, sudden trauma (such as a fall), or improper lifting techniques can all lead to different types of injuries in your lower back.
Herniated Discs
- This condition occurs when one of the discs between the vertebrae bulges or ruptures, pressing on nearby nerves and causing sharp pain or numbness.
Chronic Conditions
- Conditions like arthritis or spinal stenosis can lead to persistent lower back pain.
Poor Posture
- Sitting for long periods or slouching can strain the lower back over time, putting you at a higher risk of injury.
Sedentary Lifestyle
- Being inactive can weaken your core muscles, which help support and stabilize the spine. A weak core can set you up for lower back injuries.
Managing Lower Back Pain with Physiotherapy: One Patient’s Story
The good news is that physiotherapy is a proven approach for managing lower back pain. It focuses on identifying the root cause of your pain and developing a personalized treatment plan to address it–which is exactly what we did for a recent patient, a 42-year-old office worker we’ll call Maria.
A Comprehensive Assessment
Like many of us, Maria ignored her back pain at first, hoping it would go away. However, after weeks of discomfort that affected her ability to work and exercise, Maria sought help from the team at Key Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation Centre.
During her first visit, we conducted a thorough assessment to help us understand what was going on with Maria’s back. She told us she hadn’t suffered any obvious back injuries recently and that her pain seemed to “come out of nowhere.”
After evaluating her range of motion, strength, and posture, we determined that Maria’s back pain developed primarily due to weak core muscles and some postural issues. This information allowed us to create a treatment plan that would address her needs.
Maria’s Treatment Program
We began with some hands-on techniques to help manage Maria’s acute pain and improve her back’s range of motion, including soft tissue manipulation and careful mobilizations of her spine. We also guided her through some simple stretches and mobility exercises.
Next, we worked with Maria to strengthen her core, guiding her through targeted exercises that matched her ability level. We also provided her with a home exercise program so she could continue to work on her core strength outside the clinic.
However, we also wanted to address some of the postural concerns. Maria spent a great deal of time sitting for work. We provided her with some guidance on maintaining spinal alignment at her desk. We also suggested some strategies to ensure she regularly got up and stretched her spine.
Maria’s Results
After just a few sessions, Maria noticed significant improvements. Her pain decreased, and she felt more confident performing daily activities. By the end of her program, Maria was equipped with the tools she needed to prevent future issues.
