Understanding Acupuncture
Acupuncture involves inserting extremely thin, sterile needles into specific points on the body to stimulate natural healing processes. Studies show that it can effectively reduce muscle pain, especially when combined with other treatments, like therapeutic exercise or manual therapy.
Whether you’re dealing with chronic discomfort or a recent injury, acupuncture for muscle pain can provide several benefits. Its effects are often quick, with many patients reporting noticeable pain reduction after their first few sessions.
It’s also minimally invasive–while it does involve inserting needles into the skin and muscles, it can help reduce the need for medications or surgeries. There’s also some evidence that it can promote overall wellness, such as improving sleep or boosting energy levels.
How Acupuncture Helps Muscle Pain
It Reduces Inflammation
- Acupuncture increases blood flow to the injured muscles, helping reduce swelling and pain.
It Relaxes Muscles
- Triggering specific points can release tension and knots in tight muscles, helping to ease pain and improve mobility.
It Enhances Natural Pain Relief
- Acupuncture may stimulate the production of endorphins, the body’s natural painkillers.
Why Choose Acupuncture for Muscle Pain Management?
Acupuncture focuses on addressing the underlying causes of pain to help promote long-term health. When combined with physiotherapy, it offers a holistic approach to recovery. Incorporating acupuncture into your pain management plan can accelerate recovery and help you return to the activities you enjoy.

What to Expect During an Acupuncture Session
We know acupuncture can be intimidating for people who haven’t had a session before! The good news is that acupuncture is fairly straightforward.
We’ll always begin with an initial assessment to help us understand your symptoms, medical history, lifestyle, and pain relief goals. Part of our assessment also involves working to understand the underlying cause of your pain–that way, we can create a truly comprehensive care plan that blends acupuncture with physiotherapy techniques.
During your actual acupuncture sessions, we start with needle placement. Our acupuncturist will insert fine needles into specific points on your body, such as near the affected muscle or along related pathways. Because the needles are so thin, the process is generally painless, with most patients feeling only a slight tingling or warmth.
Next, we’ll leave the needles in place for 15-30 minutes, allowing your body to respond and begin healing. We encourage you to relax during this time, and many patients find this time deeply calming.
We’ll then remove the needles and provide you with any post-treatment recommendations, such as stretching or hydration. You might also engage in complementary therapies at our clinic, depending on your care plan.
